ACHONU CONDEMNS OKIGWE ZONE ATTACKS, URGES GOVERNMENT AND SECURITY AGENCIES TO ACT SWIFTLY.

…Calls for justice, youth restraint, community security

Distinguished Senator Athan Achonu, the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate in Imo state has condemned in strong terms the wave of violent attacks carried out by suspected armed youths across various communities in Okigwe Zone, which tragically led to the death of individuals and vandalization of properties.
In a statement released at the weekend, Senator Achonu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending his heartfelt condolences to the family of the slain guard that was killed in Umunumo. He described the act as not only shocking but a grave assault on the peace and security of the region.
The Senator also raised alarm over the broader violence that followed—including harassment of residents and the blockade of Umuahia-Anara Road, burning of vehicles and attack on motorists.
“These events reveal a dangerous breakdown of law and order in Okigwe Zone,” Senator Achonu said. “Lives are being lost daily. The Imo State Government must treat the security situation with the seriousness it deserves. Our people deserve to live in safety, not in fear.”
Reiterating his longstanding position, the Senator once again called for full and effective local government autonomy—highlighting its urgent importance in enhancing grassroots security. He stressed the need for empowered local administrations to work hand-in-hand with traditional rulers and town unions to identify, prevent, and respond to emerging security threats within their communities.
Senator Achonu also reiterated the urgent need for well-structured community vigilante systems to help stem the growing tide of violence. He emphasized that local communities must now take proactive steps to enforce their own survival, working in coordination with security agencies and Local Governments to protect lives and property.
He openly queried the relevance and functionality of local governments in the zone, questioning their visibility and role in protecting their constituents. “Our local governments must rise up and be active. Where are they in times like these? Who speaks for our communities? Who safeguards the people?” he asked.
Senator Achonu, known for his grassroots empowerment and support for local security efforts, emphasized that he has consistently provided material support to law enforcement and created employment opportunities for hundreds of youths in the region.
In his message to the youth, he made a heartfelt plea for peace and unity:
“No Igbo man should take another Igbo man’s life in the name of Biafra or for any reason whatsoever. It is criminal, it is unacceptable, and it must stop.”
He continued, “Violence is not the way. No cause or grievance justifies taking the life of your fellow brother. Let us choose peace, dialogue, and community development.”
The Senator called on the State and Federal Government to immediately strengthen security architecture in the zone, investigate the attacks thoroughly, and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and security-conscious while offering prayers for the protection of all communities across Imo State.
